Recently, Microsoft has begun rolling out Windows 11 24H2, a fresh update to the operating system that brings several exciting new features. Along with this update, there’s also a significant upgrade for Copilot, making the overall experience even better
With the update to this new version, Windows will say goodbye to a long-standing application. The update removes WordPad from the system. However, users who still rely on this app can restore it after upgrading to Windows 11 24H2, but they’ll need to follow a specific procedure to do so.
Microsoft Kills WordPad
With the upgrade to Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft removes all WordPad-related files (wordpad.exe, wordpadfilter.dll, and write.exe), rendering the application unusable. This also leads to the loss of the default reader for .rtf files.
For these files, Microsoft suggests using Word, while the Notepad app is available for taking notes. The company has decided to remove WordPad, as it considers the application outdated.
How to Restore WordPad
To restore WordPad in Windows 11 24H2 (or later), all you need to do is back up the Accessories folder. The process is simple: first, press the Windows key + E, then go to ‘This PC’ from the side panel. Next, navigate to the disk where the operating system is installed (usually disk C), and then go to Programs > Windows NT > Accessories.
Copy this folder to an external storage device (like a USB drive) before upgrading to the new version of Windows. Alternatively, you can complete this procedure from another Windows PC that hasn’t yet been updated to Windows 11 24H2
To restore WordPad, simply paste the backup you made into the same location (This PC > Programs > Windows NT > Accessories) on the PC where you want to use it again.
After that, go to the Accessories folder, right-click on the WordPad icon, and select ‘Add to Start’ and/or ‘Create shortcut on desktop.’ This step is necessary because the procedure won’t make WordPad visible in the Start menu or search results. However, with these shortcuts, the app will be easily accessible even after upgrading to Windows 11 24H2.
It’s important to note that WordPad will no longer receive any updates. No new features or security patches will be provided. As a result, continuing to use the app once support ends could pose a security risk to your computer and data. Fortunately, there are plenty of updated alternatives, both free and paid.
